The first goal of the 2008-09 English Premier League season was scored by Arsenal's Samir Nasri. The newly-signed French midfielder was on target in the fourth minute of Arsenal's early kick-off game against newly-promoted West Brom on the opening day of the season .

Dean Ashton also put his name in the record books as the fastest scorer of the 2008-09 English Premier League season. The England striker took only three minutes to score the first of his two goals in West Ham's 2-1 home victory over Wigan.

Champions Manchester United needed a 24th-minute goal from Darren Fletcher to salvage a point in their opening league match against Newcastle United who had gone ahead two minutes earlier through Obafemi Martins.

Portsmouth were the only Premier League side that needed more than two outings to open their scoring account this season.

Their first goal came after two matches and 12 minutes through England striker Jermaine Defoe in the away encounter at Everton.

On their part, League Two side Bury relied on the lethal finishing of Andy Bishop. He turned out, once more, to be his side's saviour as he became the Shakers' first scorer for the third year running.

League Two side Macclesfield went four matches without finding the net in the championship and finally broke their duck after 12 minutes of their fifth fixture, home against Luton.
