Malta Day celebrations in London

I would like to thank all concerned for the annual Malta Day held in London.

Apart from the various activities of the day, centred around Maltese culture in all its forms, the central part of the day was holy Mass at Westminster Cathedral, celebrated by Gozo Bishop Mario Grech. He gave a wonderful sermon on human life and how it has become cheapened in the eyes of many and how selfishness has taken over from the consideration of others.

The outgoing High Commissioner, Michael Refalo, his deputy and a large number of the High Commission staff took part, along with numerous Maltese expatriates. The children's choir of Qala sang beautifully as did Canon Rev. Dr Joseph Zammit, who sang two solos.

The highlight of the afternoon was a procession through some of the streets of central London, led by a British band, no doubt composed of a number of Maltese, with the statue of Il Bambina carried by a team of four following behind, and then a column of faithful people.

Many British people who love Malta and in particular those who have a devotion to Our Lady also took part in this special procession.

Apart from our national shrine in Walsingham, such a spectacle is rarely seen in the UK. So we have to thank the Maltese for bringing Our Lady to the streets of London in a country where she remains our spiritual queen despite the increasingly godless society in which we live.

Thank you Malta.

While I agree with Gerry Cowie's letter, I hope that next year a Maltese Band be invited to take part in this annual event with other Maltese festa presentation such as those we find in a village festa. Also one hope's that this would be covered with further extensive advertising in local and foreign press too.
