Madeleine Gera's latest exhibition, entitled Identity, can be described as a window on the lives and identities of others.
Inspired by the book entitled On Identity by French-Algerian writer Amin Malouf, Ms Gera's exhibition focuses on Maltese-inspired themes and subjects.
Many a strong, mysterious and dignified character grace her portraits: Bohemian men with long hair and dark eyes, gentlemen clad in full uniform seemingly from a distant era; others obviously in costume, impersonating a fictitious character, and seductive women that taunt us with their sultry disposition.
Inanimate objects are given life and also a pivotal role in Ms Gera's paintings.
Included in the exhibition are a number of streetscape paintings, characterised by different vintage and semi-modern cars and buses.
Other paintings contain personalised still-life studies in the foreground, which add curious details of introspect to an otherwise "bland" albeit picturesque landscape. The exhibition was organised in collaboration with Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar, to which part of the proceeds of the exhibition will go.
This exhibition has been made possible through the sponsorship of Gasan Mamo Insurance, Bank of Valletta, Alfred Gera and Sons, KG Art Supplies, Marsovin, British Airways, the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, Picturehouse and the Malta Tourism Authority.
The exhibition, at Auberge d'Italie, in Valletta, ends on September 30.
