‘The World’ in Gozo
The World, with the Blue Lagoon in the background.
The cruise liner The World has made a second visit to Gozo, stopping off Mgarr for a day.
The liner first stopped in Grand Harbour before anchoring off Mgarr. A large number of passengers used the ship’s launches to enjoy some time in Gozo.
The World, carrying 165 passengers and 255 crew, was also in Malta in November last year.
The Gozo Ministry said the number of cruise liners stopping off Gozo is expected to increase once a buoy for such ships is laid off Xlendi. Permits were issued recently by MEPA. The buoy is expected to be in place early next year.

@mr press......that makes two of us as i am definitely no expert myself which is why i refrain from passing comments as to the suitability or otherwise of having a buoy outside xlendi. that decision is best left to people who understand in such matters. uninformed negative comments are unwarranted.

please keep in mind that such a ship travels the whole world. people have apartment on it long term (ranging in the thousands of euros) and ''hop on and off" whenever they please. that is why possibly there were more crew than passengers on this particular event. these passengers are likely to be high spenders.
i believe cruise travel is one of the good options for gozo as long as it is done sustainably as much as possible, namely try to not have a day when all ships flock to gozo, but try and balance ships out between different days, in order to ensure that the character of the island is not lost. gozo in conjunction with the valletta waterfront project can only present an opportunity for attracting such cruise lines,

this should be done more often,even by different cruise liners and also it important that this ships should have different stops around Malta.For example ,like Dingli cliffs,Blue grotto area,Marsamxett,Sliema,and other places that are deep enough for these liners to come in.The most important is to make the tourist see the beauty of our country and also to make him spend a little bit of more money ,so we can achieve the real business of tourism.

@Mike Knight
Radio operators on board ships have become redundant for quite some time now.

Good news.Welcome to our beautiful island and hope that the guides showed some of our magnificent views and told some of our history. Let us have more. In many cases it is not the quantity but the quality. A good business start with loss for profits to come later.

i don't believe it Mr.Meldrews favourite line! The crew out numbered the passengers , where's the profit in that? it seems to me that out of work Gozitans can easily apply for a job on board one of the cruise liners then trying for a job on land ., come to think of it as an ex naval officer i too would probably apply for a radio operator on board these crusie liners and see the world for free., now thats a thought for the gozitans seeking something different for work, they can come to gozo and visit their families every so often , i tell you what its better then emigrating to Australia, Canada or Britain or the US, itsa much safer to stay on baord a cruise lines in style.

@ Mr. Press
...are you aware that the crew themselves are also tourists to our island?

Phil, I agree with you, we should keep Gozo as a quaint back-waters with high unemployment, an exodus of the talented young Gozitans. I'm against big projects like an airstrip but seems to have only positives as far as i can see. The investment is minimal and can be removed if it's not profitable. Gozo needs direct tourism and this seems a good compromise.

WOW !!, so how much did those tourists generate. A large cruise ship, with nearly 2 crew, to every passenger. Well worth the expense of Buoys around Gozo. More pollution than revenue.
