After years of discussions and planning, Victoria council has been given the green light by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority for the much needed upgrading of St George's Square.
The project, designed by John Grima, will cost around €200,000.
The area is to resurfaced with porphido slabs and will feature a small bronze fountain.
Wires on façades will be removed, water culverts will be constructed, and a new lighting system will be installed.
Mayor Robert Tabone said the project was one of the council's priorities for this legislature. The council had submitted an ambitious project to qualify for EU Structural Funds to regenerate the historic centre, but the application was turned down. The square will also be pedestrianised.
Works should be completed by mid-December.
