A total of 62 junior players will take part in the forthcoming VLTC Kettle Chips European U-14 tournament, to be held between September 15 and 20. This was announced by Paul Micallef, chairman of the Vittoriosa Lawn Tennis Club (VLTC), during a news conference at the club's premises earlier this week.

The tournament has attracted the participation of 45 foreign players from the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Russia, Latvia, Slovakia, Croatia, Austria, Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Hungary and the Czech Republic. The entry field features some highly-ranked players including Italian duo Stefano Napolitano (ranked 53rd) and Camilla Rosatello (ranked 91st).

Malta is fielding a team of 17 players with Simon Mangion, Patrick Georgiev, Bernard Cassar Torregiani, Matthew Cassar Torregiani, Raphael Sammut, Mark Schranz, Matthew Arrigo, Luca Arrigo, Luke Hammet and Malik Atwair taking part in the boys' event.

Brenda Galea, Alexia Valenzia, Becky Hammet, Susannah Mifsud, Bettina Aquilina, Maria Giorgia Farrugia Sacco and Emma Dimech will carry local hopes in the girls' competition.

The tournament starts with the round of 32 in both the singles competitions while doubles events get underway with the Last 16.

The first matches will be played on Monday with the finals scheduled for Saturday, September 20.

Registration for the main draw will be held tomorrow between 6 and 7 p.m.
