The importance of regular tooth-brushing using fluoride toothpaste was emphasised yesterday during World Oral Health Day.

The scorching sun and high temperatures did not keep people entering Valletta from stopping at Freedom Square, where dentists were giving information about oral hygiene.

The one-day event was held by the Dental Public Health Division of the Primary Health Department with the collaboration of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the University of Malta and the Health Promotion Department. A number of sponsors distributed free samples.

Public health dental consultant Paula Vassallo said people should also avoid sugary snacks and drinks between meals and visit a dentist at least once a year. Fluoride in toothpaste was also very important as it strengthens the tooth enamel and makes it more resistant to decay.
