The Malta Union of Teachers has called for talks with the government and the university on ways to make the teaching profession more attractive as fewer students join the teaching course than the number of teachers who are retiring or resigning.

MUT President John Bencini in comments given to timesofmalta.com said a shortage of teachers were already being felt, especially in primary schools.

Education Minister Dolores Cristina said that while there were enough teachers at present, action needed to be taken to avoid a problem in the future.

The Minister and Mr Benicini were replying to questions by Rosanne Zammit about the situation, its causes, and what is being done about it. (See video above).
