The government should clarify whether the privatisation of Enemalta's gas division will translate into an increase in the price of gas cylinders, Labour's spokesman on utilities, Marlene Pullicino, said.
Last week, the government announced that Enemalta will be transferring the management and operation of its LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) activities to Gasco Energy Ltd and Liquigas Malta Ltd, two joint-venture companies between Multigas Ltd and Liquigas SpA of Italy.
On announcing the privatisation, the government gave details on the companies' financial commitments but did not mention anything about safeguarding the consumer against price increases, Dr Pullicino said.
Through the agreement, the companies would hold a dominant position in the gas market so the government ought to clarify whether this would lead to an increase in prices, she added.
