Some 50 people have been evacuated from the Channel Tunnel after a fire broke out in a shuttle train which carries freight. The blaze is thought to have involved a chemical carrier.

The passengers escaped via a service tunnel. There were no injuries.

Eurostar said the tunnel, beneath the English Channel, has been closed to all traffic. It is expected to remain closed at least until tomorrow.

The incident happened some 11km into the tunnel from the French side.
