The annual San Michel Junior Open came to a close earlier this month at the Vittoriosa Lawn Tennis Club (VLTC). The tournament was played under the auspices of the Malta Tennis Federation.

The VLTC was a hive of activity during competition time with 54 promising players, aged between eight and 15, competing in various singles and doubles events.

In the girls' U-10, Katrina Sammut emerged winner with Katya Friggieri finishing runner-up. The U-10 boys' title went to Timmy Aquilina. He beat Thomas Camilleri in a tightly contested final.

The finals of the U-12 events were similarly tense with Maria Giorgia Farrugia Sacco having the better of Steffi Gambin 6-4 6-3 and Raphael Sammut beating Mark Schranz.

Farrugia Sacco teamed up with Rebecca McCathy to win the U-12 girls doubles at the expense of Steffi Gambin and Melanie Valenzia.

Sammut and Schranz were the clear winners in the boys' event.

In the final of the U-14 singles, Brenda Galea overcame the opposition offered by Alexia Valenzia and Patrick Georgiev beat Sammut, who had to settle for the runners-up spot this time.

The two U-14 finalists, Galea and Valenzia, also contested the U-16 girls' event. Again, Galea came out on top to add another title to her name.

Alexia Valenzia teamed up with Klara Sitarova to win the girls U-16 doubles with Susannah Mifsud and Bettina Aquilina the runners-up.

The boys' U-16 competition was won by Bernard Cassar Torreggiani who beat Patrick Georgiev in a tense final. In the boys' U-16 doubles, Bernard Cassar Torreggiani teamed up with his brother Matthew to beat Chris Abdelghani and Julian Sammut 2-6 6-3 6-4.
