A few weeks ago Maltese company Computime had been selected among all Cisco premier certified partners in Greece, Cyprus and Malta for its outstanding performance last year, and therefore recognised as Cisco premier partner of the year. This certification is awarded to system integrators that have demonstrated a commitment to technical excellence and continuing education.
"As costs escalate, we need to better communicate the fact that IT can enable companies to adapt quickly to fast-changing business scenarios. User accessibility, mobility, business security, business resiliency, productivity, unified communications, and corporate environmental responsibility are all areas to which technology can directly provide solutions," according to Andrew Borg, director at Computime.
"Our challenge is to convince users that these technologies can really help achieve results, while our role is to help them identify the best solutions for their requirements. We need to send out the right message that new work models are achievable, thanks to the technology which is available; this will help organisations embrace new work arrangements."
With a staff complement of around 90 people, Computime offers a gamut of IT services, ranging from IT security to networks and systems, as well as business applications and software development, in Malta, North Africa and the UK. The involvement with Cisco focuses mainly on the provision of networking solutions, by way of multimedia solutions (voice, data, and video) in the various media, both wired and wireless.
"Being a Cisco premier partner imposes on us a responsibility to provide solutions with services that match the quality of Cisco products. Besides meeting revenue volumes to retain the status, we need to keep our staff constantly qualified and trained on Cisco products as well as other related technologies," added Mr Borg.
So what does the recent Cisco award mean to a relatively small company that faces competition from larger organisations in nearby countries?
"It means that we're doing something right," immediately replied Mr Borg. "During the past couple of years we have been working very hard to implement our vision of growing our international client base. Being acknowledged by a company like Cisco with a regional award, especially when this includes much larger countries like Cyprus and Greece, gives us the confidence that we're on the right track in delivering world-class multimedia solutions. In essence this award recognises the quality of our people. By further investing in our experts, we ensure that they have the right skills to assist businesses maximise the benefits delivered by the technologies that they invest in."
Cisco has been very active lately in Malta, organising the first ever Expo locally last June. It was attended by over 250 industry executives from Malta and abroad.
"The Cisco Expo is an annual event organised fully by Cisco, so our involvement was limited to helping with the guest list and receiving the award! Choosing Malta as the destination for the Expo, together with other local activities that they are undertaking, shows that Cisco sees the potentiality of the Maltese market. The local market is quite mature, so this represents a good opportunity for Cisco to provide higher level services, other than basic connectivity.
"From the Maltese perspective, it is also an acknowledgement that Cisco sees Malta as a good forum for discussing leading edge solutions."
The emphasis on education is also evident through Computime's close relationship with another global IT company, Sun Microsystems. Computime's instructors have recently successfully delivered another Java programming language course. Java, created by Sun, is the most popular open source programming language in the world.
Computime is the only training provider in Malta that can deliver training based on curricula developed by Sun, using official training manuals and course work. These courses are covered by the myPotential scheme. Certification from Sun is recognised industry wide, and is providing a variety of opportunities as the demand for certified people is rapidly increasing.
