The summer transfer window that closed on September 1 showed a record spending of £520.8m that includes the £32m Manchester United had to pay South American firm MSI for the permanent transfer of Argentine Carlos Tevez.
Man. United were also involved in the biggest deal between two Premier League clubs, forking out £30.75m for the capture of Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham.
The £520.8m global sum for the summer transfer window includes Premier League clubs only.
The rundown of these spendings since the arrival of the new transfer method, reads: 2002 - £179.4m; 2003 - £214.9m; 2004 - £231.4m; 2005 - £243.3m; 2006 - £280.8m; 2007 - £447.0m; 2008 - £520.8m.
There were some changes in the all-time top ten chart for transfers in the British game as three major moves in the list now involve the two Manchester clubs. These feature Robinho, Tevez and Berbatov.
The chart denotes only three deals involving two English clubs. The other seven concern foreign teams as well as and indicate five players signed by Premier League clubs.
