Influenza vaccine

The Health Division is calling on the public to get the vaccine against influenza.

The vaccine will be available from the Department of Primary Health and is free to everyone aged 55 and over, to patients of chronic diseases of the lungs, heart, liver, kidney, diabetes mellitus and any immunodeficiency conditions, including HIV and AIDS and those residing in institutions.

In the case of those younger than 55, evidence of one of the above conditions needs to be confirmed by presenting a Schedule V Control Card or a recent medical certificate.

Local councils and private family doctors will be offering the vaccine free of charge to those eligible for it. Those interested should contact their local council or family doctor for more information and registration.

Vaccination facilities will be available at local health centres.

Housebound patients can ask their doctor to request a community nurse to administer the vaccine at home.

The influenza vaccine will be administered from health centres from November 3-22.

The vaccine is not to be administered before November in order to ensure immunity throughout the influenza season.
