Outbound Maltese tourists during July are estimated at 36,175, meaning an increase of 3.5 per cent over the same month last year, the National Statistics Office said yesterday.

Of these, 83.9 per cent travelled by air and 31,041 visited EU destinations, mostly Italy and the UK.

Between January and July, the number of Maltese passengers travelling by air and sea amounted to 161,491 - a rise of six per cent over the corresponding period last year. Of these, 86 per cent travelled to EU destinations, again mostly to the UK and Italy. Male passengers exceeded females, accounting for 58.2 per cent of the total.

The largest portion of outbound passengers (46.9 per cent) was aged between 25 and 44, followed by those in the 45 to 64 age bracket (37.2 per cent).

The number of Maltese passengers, leaving by air and sea in July went up by six per cent over the corresponding period last year, totalling 161,491. Of these, 86 per cent (31,041) travelled to EU destinations.

Maltese residents departing by air and sea amounted to 36,175.
