More Maltese going abroad
The number of Maltese going abroad rose by 3.5 percent in July to reach 36,175, the NSO said today.
It said 31,041 travelled to EU destinations, notably Italy and the UK.
Between January and July 161,491 Maltese went abroad, an increase of 6.0 percent over the same period in 2007. Just under half of them were aged between 25 and 44.

Between January and July, I left Malta four times, thanks to Ryan Air.
It's a shame that I pay more in taxes, than what I pay for the flight.

The number of Maltese going abroad rose by 3.5 percent in July to reach 36,175, the NSO said today, because it is cheaper to buy a ticket, go for a short holiday and BUY all your requirements from abroad, rather then pay through our noses in Malta.
Food, beverages, cars, clothes, computers, printers, pasta, you name it, even medicine is cheaper. Even Mars bars are cheaper abroad, but one can buy Maseratis, and there goes one now, - - - Oh no, mistake, it's only a TaTa car.
NSO say that inflation is 6.2%.
Mhux hekk!
NSO are the same bunch of people that made a small mistake of some £m85 million in calculating the amount of deficit of 1998!
Next please.

You are right Rita. This statistic does not really say anything and has no relevance. It would become interesting if you divide that statistic into how many people went for holiday, business, moved for good etc. The NSO needs maybe itself a course in statistics.

going abroad = any destination apart from Malta :)
the article isn't discussing the reason for travel,
or what percentage of those leaving returned to Malta.
what's the problem Ms. Spiteri ?

Ms Spiteri - Basic rule of the EU, freedom of movement. Nor The Times nor the NSO nor anyone has details of whether these people have gone on holiday or business trips. Nobody knows because nobody asks. It's called 'freedom'.
