I just could not believe it. Or maybe, I was getting it wrong? We in Malta have been saying that Frontex is not doing enough to stop the flow of illegal immigrants.

Now we have someone by the name of Julien Jeandesboz, a researcher connected with the think-tank Centre for European Studies, showing concern about the impact of Frontex's work on freedoms and fundamental rights. I ask whose freedom and fundamental rights?

Mr Jeandesboz goes on to say that Frontex's work should be submitted to a full assessment of its impact on freedoms and fundamental rights and that the agency should start offering assistance to illegal immigrants.

It seems that another "do-gooder" has taken to the newspapers. Perhaps Mr Jeandesboz should take a trip to Ethiopia, Senegal, the Gold Coast and other African states to see to it that would-be illegal immigrants obtain their freedoms and fundamental rights before heading for Malta and Italy in unseaworthy boats from the Libyan coast.

Just to rub it in, Mr Jeandesboz asks the UN High Commission for Refugees officials taking part in Frontex to be given status on the Frontex management board. Perhaps this gentleman should also propose that half a dozen immigrants should also join the board.

They could then ensure that the boats from Libya are made comfortable and well equipped for the journey across the Mediterranean and Mr Jeandesboz could stand on the breakwater and welcome them into Grand Harbour!
