The agreement that was reached between the government and the General Workers' Union over the shipyards' privatisation should serve as an example of how to act in the face of challenges affecting workers, a Church commission said yesterday. The Church's Commission on Pastoral Work in Employment said the agreement reached on Friday, after weeks of mediation, should be an example of how everyone can work together to respect the rights and dignity of workers.
In its statement, the commission said there were many positive and genuine elements in the way the different parties had acted, adding that there was constructive debate geared towards reaching a fair agreement.
It congratulated the shipyard workers and thanked the mediator, Malta Employers Association director general Joe Farrugia, for his important contribution.
