Charged with offences near immigrants' centre

A 55-year-old man from Ħal Far was yesterday remanded in custody after he was charged with a string of offences in the vicinity of the immigrants' OIWAS Open Centre in Ħal Far Road.

Joseph Zahra was charged with threatening a person with a firearm and driving a vehicle towards a group of people in the vicinity of the open centre with intent to cause them harm.

He was also charged with threatening and assaulting a police sergeant and constable, disobeying police orders and breaching the public peace.

Mr Zahra was also accused of causing over €1,000 worth of damage to a car close to the open centre.

He pleaded not guilty.

Inspector Priscilla Caruana prosecuted.
