I wholeheartedly support the setting up of an International Ecumenical Centre of St Paul, a sublime idea of Mgr Charles G. Vella (The Sunday Times, August 17). It would perfectly fit in the celebrations of the Pauline Year by the Catholic world. Malta and only Malta could be the ideal home of an international centre of this calibre.

Mgr Vella sees a positive outcome and the beneficial results, both economic and spiritual, for Malta and its various institutions, from an immense source of energy such as the International Pauline Centre.

Ah International Ecumenical Centre of St Paul is only a concrete follow up to the call and the challenging message posed to Malta and to the Maltese by the beloved late Pope John Paul II for Malta's spiritual role in Europe. He had concluded his message by saying that "It is my fervent prayer that Malta, in full fidelity to her noble part and committed to build a future filled with hope, will play a leading role in promoting new forms of collaboration among peoples for the welfare and authentic progress of all."

Archbishop Paul Cremona is seen as the ideal spiritual leader to inspire others to rise to the occasion by taking the Pope's message and let Malta be a focal point of the Pauline spirit through the International Ecumenical Centre.
