St Paul's Bay received a welcome clean-up recently thanks to an army of volunteers organised by local chef Marvin Gauci.

The clean-up operation lasted from 9.30 a.m. until 1 p.m. and a total of two skips were filled.

Volunteers were made up of staff, friends, family and customers of New Dimension Scuba (NDS), H2O Divers and Mr Gauchi's Tarragon Restaurant.

Around 30 divers from the two participating diving schools helped remove rubbish from the sea, while another 30 volunteers helped pick up rubbish from the rocks.

Mr Gauci said that debris removed from the sea included sunbeds, tyres and umbrellas, which were difficult for the divers to carry.

Mr Gauci hopes the clean-up operation raises awareness about the problems of littering and would like to repeat the clean-up operation every six months. Next time, he hopes to use a crane to help remove large objects from the sea that the divers were unable to carry.

"I would like to thank all the people who took part in the exercise; we really appreciate it. I think that 60 volunteers was a great response", Mr Gauci added.
