Digital radio trials underway

Digital audio broadcasting (DAB), already popular overseas, is soon to be launched in Malta through DigiBNetwork.

DAB trials kicked off last month to ensure sound quality in time for launch. DigiBNetwork is currently using one transmitter and intends to increase transmitters in Malta and Gozo through a single frequency network.

DAB broadcasts sound digitally across radio waves resulting in exceptionally clear sound.

DAB is the latest craze overseas as it offers endless benefits. With DAB, tuning is made simple. After purchasing a digital radio, listeners will never have to move the dial to find their favourite radio station. The station may be selected from a display screen. Every DAB digital radio comes with an LCD display screen giving details about the station and music being listened to. It can even show contact information, song names and titles.

DAB also allows listeners to pause, rewind and record live radio programmes.

Several local FM stations are currently participating in the DAB trials, including Radio 101, RTK, Super 1 Radio, Capital Radio, 89.7 Bay, Smash Radio, Calypso 101.8, Campus FM and Christian Light Radio.

More than a few stations are also being rebroadcast on the new platform: BBC World Service Voa Music Mix, Rai Stereo 1/2/3, Retesport, Radio Deejay, World Radio Network, Classic Choice, The Groove, and Radio Padre Pio.
