Obituary
AGIUS. On September 2, MARY née Rizzo, widow of Hugo, aged 82, passed peacefully away at Zammit Clapp Hospital, comforted by the rites of Holy Church after an illness borne with great fortitude. She leaves to mourn her loss her sons Jean and Frank (jon lukas), and Ray (of Club 47, Madliena), their respective wives Amanda and Mary, her grandchildren Maria, Lily, Mark, Ashley and Rachel, her brothers Joe and John, and her sisters Bice, Ena and their respective spouses, nephews, nieces, relatives and many friends. Mass praesente cadavere will be said at Balluta parish church today at 2 p.m. followed by interment at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Dar tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi, will be appreciated.
BORG-BARTOLO. On Thursday, September 4, JOHN G., aged 71, after a long illness borne with Christian fortitude. He leaves to mourn his loss his beloved wife Ena, his daughters Christine, Patricia and Joseph Rafferty, his adorable grandchildren Hazel, Joseph, Patrick, William and Michael, his brothers, sisters, in-laws and their spouses, nieces, nephews and friends. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital on Monday, September 8, at 8 a.m. for Balzan parish church where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 8.30 a.m., followed by interment at Addorlorata Cemetery. No flowers by request, but donations to Malta Hospice Movement will be greatly appreciated. May God grant him eternal rest.
CASSAR. On Friday, September 5, at Mater Dei Hospital, JOSEPH widower of Carmela née Schembri, of Cospicua residing at Sta Luċija, aged 88, passed peacefully away comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his daughters Evelyn and her husband Alfred Theuma, Miriam and her husband Carmel De Gabriele, Marthese and her husband Victor Titley, grandchildren Renzo and his wife Patricia, Cheryl and her husband Dennis, Malcolm and his fiancée Nadine, Mireille and her fiancé Jonathan, Robert and his girlfriend Tracy, great grandchildren Mirabel, Nicole, Luca and Andrea, his brothers and sisters, in-laws and their respective spouses and families, nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital today at 8 a.m. for St Pius X parish church in Sta Luċija where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 8.30 a.m. followed by interment at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery in the family grave. No flowers by request but donations to Dar tal-Providenza in Siġġiewi will be greatly appreciated. The family would like to thank the management and staff of Casa Antonia for their constant care and support. Lord, grant him eternal rest.
FARRUGIA. On September 5, at Mater Dei Hospital, FRANCOIS, aged 60, peacefully went to meet the Risen Lord, comforted by the rites of Holy Church after an illness borne with great courage. Beloved husband of Connie née Buttigieg, he also leaves to mourn his loss his daughter Angele and Adrian, his son Christian and Christine, his grandchildren, his mother Rita and father-in-law Joseph, his brothers, sisters and in-laws, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. Mass praesente cadavere will be said today at 8 a.m. at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery chapel followed by interment in the family vault. No flowers by request but donations to Dar tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi, will be greatly appreciated. Special thanks go to all the staff at Medical Ward 5. SCIBERRAS. On September 4, Chev. CHARLES SCIBERRAS O.S.J. (First Mayor of St Julians), aged 69, passed peacefully away comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his irreparable loss his wife Yvonne née Farrugia Jones, his sons Canon Etienne Sciberras and Owen, his sister Mary Knight of UK, his in-laws, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital today at 8 a.m. for Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish church, Balluta, where Mass praesente cadavere will be celebrated at 8.30 a.m., followed by interment in the family vault at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to The Archbishop's Seminary, Dar Tal-Kleru and Dar tal-Providenza will be greatly appreciated. Lord, grant him eternal rest.
SULTANA. On September 5, EMMANUEL, known as Sultana tal-Gazzetti, aged 64, of Valletta, passed away peacefully, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife Mary Rose, his children James and his wife Shirley, Walter and his fiancée Lorna, his sister Annie, his first cousins Mary and Ċensina Frendo, Carmen Burlo, Lysette Pullicino, Amy Callus, his other cousins in Australia and their families, other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital today at 12.30 p.m. for Ta' Ġieżu church, Valletta where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 1 p.m. followed by interment at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. The family regret they are unable to receive visitors.

Carnival poster competition
The Malta Council for Culture and the Arts is inviting the public to design a poster and take part in a competition to choose the official Carnival poster.
The poster should include the heading Karnival Ta' Malta 2009 and the dates of the celebrations, February 20 to 24.
Interested parties are to present their posters to Anton Miceli, Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, 230 Triq Ir-Repubblika, Valletta by September 24.

Żurrieq streets closed
The following streets in Żurrieq - San Mikiel, L-Indipendenza, Ġwann Camilleri, Vincent Dimech, Salvu Psaila, Matteolo Saliba, Marjanu Gerada, Il-Bronja, Alessandru, San Bartilmew, Santa Katerina, l-Imqabba, Santu Formosa, Il-Qrendi, Il-Ħaddiema, L-Inġiniera, Il-Kbira, Carmelo Caruana, Dun Ġużepp Zammit, and P.P. Saydon, Misraħ ir-Repubblika, Vjal il-Blue Grotto, Misraħ San Lazzru and Misraħ Mattia Preti - will be closed to traffic today from 9 a.m.
Qualifications framework
The Malta Qualifications Council will hold an information meeting on the European Qualifications Framework on September 12 at 8.30 a.m.
The meeting is aimed at representatives of parents' associations from state, private and Church schools and will be held at the council's premises in 16/18 Tower Promenade, Sta Luċija.

Seafood and wine weekend
The seafood and wine weekend, jointly organised by Delicata and Southport Villa and Gardens in Marsaxlokk, kicked off yesterday and will carry on this evening and tomorrow.
Southport Villa is located on the Marsaxlokk seafront.
