Greek Orthodox Church

The Greek Orthodox Church is located in Cotoner block and its entrance is through a portal which is one of a series and similar to others in the same block.

This part was reconstructed after the war after sustaining heavy damage from aerial bombardment, however, the reconstruction was very faithful to the original.

The entrance consists of a square-headed doorway set between attached pilasters having channel-jointed rustication on high plinths. Above the door is a circular fanlight, above which are three Florentine voussoirs, also channel-jointed. All is topped by a broken entablature and cornice, with pilastered ends.

At the centre is a medallion with a face carved into it. There are no specific architectural elements that show that the place is used as a church, except for Latin crosses (ironically not Greek crosses) and a notice on the door.

Mepa scheduled the Greek Orthodox Church as a Grade 2 national monument as per Government Notice No. 276/08 in the Government Gazette dated March 28.
