Fr Antoine Borg has been appointed Mġarr’s new parish priesh, the Curia said. Fr Borg, 35, is from Mosta and was ordained priest in 2003. He has served as vice-parish priest in Mosta.
let's hope that this tradition has some form of accountability...charity starts at home.

Before anyone has to comment, you have to see all facts, not just throw the stones because you heard less than a drop in the ocean of the full story and its making! Mgarr's tradition goes back more than fifty years, and rather than an auction, it is a donation with a sacrifice. Why? The group who is ready to give the highest donation, will be carrying the statute, which believe me, in mid August, with unusual clothes is a great sacrifice. The donation will be the main contribution towards the feast expenses, which the Mgarr church is responsible for (not like other villages that have band clubs and fireworks clubs). So, one needs to know what is behind an event to effectively justify his/her criticism. I am from Mgarr, and fully agree with David. Good luck Fr Borg.

All Imgarrin seem to be in favour of this fund raising tradition. This is not only healthy but also philantropic. Our very best wishes to Fr. A. Borg on his new appointment. May God bless you and all Imgarrin.

Congratulations, Dun Antoine. I'm sure the Mgarrin are going to be happy with you like we had been here in Mosta.

People attend and participate in AUCTIONS out of their own free will & the Mgarrin in this case are no exception. This shows how dedicated we are to Our Lady and the feast we celebrate without a hint of fighting!! Ghidilhom David!! .....& by the way call it what you like; Auction, Farce, Comedy... often there seems to be a hint of envy in certain people's comments, especially when some towns can hardly find enough men to carry their statue.

David, I do not subscribe to such use of words like comedy and farce, however we have to accept that not everything that is tradition is acceptable and valid by today's standards. Even the church itself has made great strides in favour of a more social outlook to life. So yes such practices need to be debated with an open mind. And by the way if I'm not mistaken you're not a pure imgarri. Traditionally (sic) you're Pawlist jew Tarxiniz(not sure) Surely you were an altar boy at Paola.

It's true this is a tradition - a weird tradition that is.

Whilst we welcome Fr Borg and pray for him to carry his duties diligently for the spiritual benefit of our community, I would like to ask Messrs J Borg and J Micallef to get there facts right. It is no ‘comedy’ and no ‘farce’ but a TRADITION that generates funds for the needs of the church in Imgarr and charity. Our community is proud of such a tradition and proud with the manner that we as a community celebrate devotedly, the feast of St Mary. Messrs J Borg and J Micallef and others who may like to comment on the same lines, please refrain, such comments hurt us Imgarrin.

Dear Parish Priest dont take note of what these people are saying. They know not what they are talking about. These people want to blow up our traditions for which we the Maltese nation are renowned.
j borg (on 6/9/08)
pls dear parish priest stop that comedy that is done every year. the statue of our lady is like an article in an auction.
J.Micallef (on 6/9/08)
I hope now we are going to be spared the annual farce in which people are enticed to spend a fortune in order to carry the statue on feast day.
