Marsalforn road inviting an accident

This photograph is of the so-called walkway between the Il-Kartell restaurant and Il-Qbajjar promenade in Marsalforn.

Marsalforn is heavily populated not just in the summer months but also in winter by both Gozitans and Maltese. With hundreds of cars and people competing for space on it everyday, this "walkway" will soon be the cause of an accident. Last week it was announced that a number of projects are going to be carried out with EU funds but nothing was mentioned regarding the Marsalforn area.

This village has the most restaurants and apartments in Gozo and it is the authorities' responsibility to make the area safe for those who pay to dine and stay there. I urge the Żebbug local council to take the first steps towards an urgent solution to the problem.

The same appeal goes out to the Malta Tourism Authority given the number of hotels and restaurants located in this area.

Talking of Qbajjar Road, today, I experienced a nasty incident myself. This morning, like every other day, we had heavy traffic congestions on Qbajjar Road. At about 10.30am the street was jammed with cars parked all along the right side while about five cars were parked on the wrong side of it, naturally while the owners did their shopping in the surrounding outlets. In the meantime traffic was trying to move uphill as well as downhill! My car was properly parked just in front of the Chemist when a four-wheel car hit my front tyre and ripped it right through. The hassle and the expense followed. I was lucky I wasn’t coming out of the car myself at the time.
When will the Zebbug Council take heed?

@Miriam Galea,
I'm dreading the experience you just mentioned. The whole area is not safe now, let alone then.

What irrates us most is the lack of a direct bus route from Marsalforn to Mgarr harbour to catch the ferry. The bus from Rabat to Mgarr does not wait for the bus from Marsalforn! A look at the bus timetable will prove me right. When I complained I was told to take a taxi. Apart from all this however life in Marsalforn is fine but some much still has to be done. Swimming at Ghar Qawqla is like paradise and Colin, the beachman, spoils the tourists ever so much. The sandy beach in front of the Police Station instead is always dirty and full of sea weeds. One last word of advice regards notices. They were all written in Maltese and foreigners of course did not understand a single word. English used to be widely used but not anymore . Please surprise us when we come back next year....

For the past 8 years my husband and I have been spending July and August in a flat which we bought as a summer residence in Marsalforn in Trig il Qbajjar. We both enjoy the stay and have learnt to appreciate the Gozitans and life in Marsalforn. This summer however things took a turn for the worst. We found a construction site, cars parked in the middle of the road near the supermarket because people had to do their shopping and even ladies washing their balconies and sweeping the dirty water right out of the balconies themselves. Many neighbours put a chair in front of their front doors so that people cannot park. The result is that people who move around on foot have to jump the hurdles! This road is full of garages so parking is limited. Many put a no parking sign on their front doors even if no garage exists there. There is a dire need for a safe pavement for pedestrians. During the night especially at week ends traffic goes mad and often wakes us up: cars just go down the hill at full speed.. We agree with Mr Darmanin and Ms Galea.

Wait until the excavation and construction of semi basement (2 levels) garages, ground floor shops and overlying flats starts a few metres away. can you imagine this tower there Mr. Darmanin? Yes, Mepa approved this. have a look at PA03023/02. Marsalforn is in ruins. Thank god for the Maltese (who are used to live by cranes all year round) that still go and rent flats in Marsalforn for a week-end.
Marsalforn was once a beauty. No more unless one make a music surround system in his flat overlooking the sea and close all doors and windows from dust and noise....and switch on an air condition of course.
Eco-Gozo indeed!

May I take this opportunity in invite all lovers of Marsalforn of the facebook to join our group: “Friends of Marsalforn” to put pressure on the authorities to embellish and upgrade the present state of this beautiful tourist resort.
Come on, lovers of Gozo, particularly Marsalforn, stand up to be counted. We need your support. Marsalforn deserves better!!!!!!

Whilst on the subject of Marsalforn, I would like to make public an issue which I have personally mentioned on a number of occasions to the local Mayor regarding the traffic flow on Qbajjar Road in the vicinity of Il-Mahzen supermarket, Galea supermarket and further up the road.
Many times during the day, the traffic in this particular area is at a standstill due to the fact that there is a bottle neck infront of Il-Mahzen.
The solution is for the road to become “one way traffic” uphill, because traffic downhill, at a certain speed, is very dangerous especially after sunset.
Are the authorities waiting for the first casualty to do something?
When pedestrians are caught in the frequent traffic congestions, they have to “climb the wall” for safety as there isn’t even a pavement! Talking of pavements… the one on the pharmacy side is all broken as cars and heavy vehicles choose to park there temporarily for shopping purposes.
In the meantime the residents of this street have no option but to inhale the exhaust coming from the congestion on the road.
