I come from Switzerland and I was in Malta for two months to improve my English. I enjoyed my stay in Malta, so I spent a very relaxed and inspiring time here - with one big exception. I daily had to see horses standing in the heat of summer, often for a long time in the scorching heat. Their drivers, on the other hand, were sitting in the shadow of the carriages.

In the past, horses used to stand for hours in Valletta at the Palace Square without shade. Now at last there is one awning, but there's not enough room for all the horses.

Horse experts and animal lovers agree that these animals suffer. The concerns for profit of the horse owners are more important than those for the horses' welfare.

We can imagine how other animals like pigs and cows are treated in Malta when it seems there are no specific rules on how to treat animals.

This cruelty to animals is a blot on Malta and does a lot of damage to this island. Why can't the goverment change this situation and how can people watch that cruelty every day! In our country ill-treatment of any animals is forbidden by law. Animal owners who break the rules are punished and their animals confiscated.

Nature and animals cannot defend themselves, so it is time for Maltese people to wake up and take more care of their beautiful country, in the same way as they take care of their children. Who would like to visit a country that ignores animal dignity so much?
