Danica Spiteri finished second in the ninth Triathlon Championships for the Small States of Europe, held recently in Luxembourg.

In a race which saw the participation of 45 triathletes, mainly from Luxembourg apart from those of Monaco, Malta, Liechtenstein and Cyprus, Malta champion Spiteri managed to hold her own and place a creditable second in a time of 2 hours 39 minutes and 56 seconds.

The winner of the women's race was Luxembourg's Myriam Reuland. Her winning time was 2:36.38. Sandra Lieners, also from Luxembourg, was third in 2:42.40.

Fabio Spiteri, the other triathlete from Malta in the championships, finished the race, which he later described as the toughest of his career, in 10th place in 2:18.56. The men's race was won by Herve Banti, from Monaco, in 1:54.56. He finished ahead of Luxembourg duo Yannick Lieners and Christian Krombach.

Oswald Spiteri accompanied the Maltese triathletes in Luxembourg. He represented the Malta Triathlon Association at a meeting for officials from triathlon federations in the small states of Europe. During the meeting, it was decided that the next edition of the championships are to be held in Malta next May.

The participation of the Maltese triathletes in the Luxembourg races was made possible thanks to the assistance of the Maltese Olympic Committee.
