MEPA caseload grows
The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) said today that it determined 336 development applications in August and received 428 new applications. The net pending caseload at the end of the month was 4,921.
During August the Authority processed 82 notifications of development, which, according to the Development Notification Order 2001, do not require a formal application.
During the same month, 69 Stop and Enforcement notices were issued, 55 in Malta and 14 in Gozo.
In August 2008, 47 enforcement cases were closed, 31 in Malta and 16 in Gozo. 33 enforcement cases were sanctioned by the issue of a sanctionable permit. Another 12 cases were resolved since owners decided to remove illegal development and comply with enforcement notice. During the same month two cases were withdrawn by MEPA.

I agree 100% - if the planning section--all areas - is high priority, and it appears the current government IS taking MEPA as a priority, then added resources (staff on the ground as well as supervisory) should alleviate the problem.
Also it must streamline the "revisions" we have all heard so much about. Surely the best way to improve the entire planning scene is to really prioritise the issue from every aspect ? I don't think many of the public would object to selective money / manpower being thrown at MEPA to solve the many problems ASAP ?

Solving this backlog problem at MEPA is not 'rocket science'!
Whenever there is a backlog, there is one very simple solution - you add resources (in this case more people to process applications).
If you cannot attract skilled people because of poor pay or whatever - you increase the fees for processing applications, and pay the staff accordingly.
Is this so difficult to do?
