Naxxar fireworks tragedy

Feast grates on emotions of woman who lost a daughter

For Helen Grech, the mother of Sina Sammut who died in the Naxxar explosion, feast decorations along her street make her grief even worse. Photo: Chris Sant Fournier

Six months after losing her daughter in the Naxxar fireworks explosion, Helen Grech cannot bear to look out into her street and watch the decorations forming part of the celebration of the feast of Our Lady of Victories this weekend.

"The decorations are out of place... I feel uncomfortable looking at them. I would have liked to move out of the village during these days," Ms Grech said, adding that the festivities around her and her family only exacerbated their sorrow after the death of her daughter.

On March 12, 35-year-old mother-of-two Sina Sammut was killed in her home as was her neighbour, 47-year-old Paul Camilleri, suspected to have been manufacturing fireworks inside his garage in Triq Ħal Dgħejf. The explosion demolished three houses and damaged others.

Ms Grech said that this year her late daughter's children, Gareth and Kirsty, were ignoring the feast. "They used to look forward to the feast but this year they barely mentioned it."

The children are living with their father at their aunt's house after their home was completely demolished.

"It's been six months since the explosions and their house has not even started being re-built... They still have to share a bed with their father," Ms Grech said.

"We are all hurt by the tragedy... Many people are hurt that the feast is going ahead as usual this year," she said.

The link between the fireworks and the village feast has caused various Naxxar residents to conclude that, this year, the feast ought to have been cancelled as a sign of mourning and respect.

Last week, some victims of the fireworks explosion expressed their disappointment at the fact that, despite the tragedy, feast celebrations of Our Lady of Victories would go on as usual and with the participation of the Victory Band Club and the Peace Band Club.

The Peace Band Club was closed after the police found fireworks stored in the basement, close to a petrol station, shortly after the explosion. The band committee was charged in court over the find.

Both the Victory Band Club and the Peace Band Club declared that they will tone down their performances during the feast.

Shame on all Naxxar citizens and the church for allowing this feast to take place. They should have agreed not to do any outside festivities as a sign of respect.

Look at Marsaxlokk's example. That is what I call REAL respect to others!!!!!

@ V. Vella of Hal Buzbiez. --- Come on!!! tell the readers that you were only joking.

@ V Vella

Have you no consideration, compassion, and sense of decency? Mrs. Grech and her family have endured the tragic loss of a family member due to the selfish criminal actions of a neighbour. The least that the Naxxarin should do is to forego any form of exuberant celebrations this time around out of respect for the deceased as well as the bereaved. If you cannot agree to this, then you are a hard-hearted person indeed. Would you be among those who will be screaming "Viva l-Bambina" this weekend as an outward show of your Christian beliefs? As a Christian you might consider showing compassion to others.

shame on all those people in Naxxar who contributed for the feast's celebrations.I hail from another village I am not a naxxarija as we maltese say,how could you hurt Helen's heart more than you did ?her only daughter has been torn to rubble, while she was in her own house, and as if no one cares the feast will be in full bloom while Sina's parents ,her husband and her young kids suffer in silence ,do you have to be a firework's worker so that the village mourns for you ? Sina for me was a marthyr, she died in her nest for someboby else's lust. The church should be ashamed to let the external celebrations carry on with the feast ,could'nt they at least celebrate internally?you naxxar residents put yourself in Helen's position for a while ,see if it were your daughter who died in such a macabre way would you like to see any decorations on your street?,while I sympathize with Sina's family for all their sufferings I ask once again 'do you have a heart? 'Are we catholics or what?My heart goes out for dear Sina and her family.
Victor Vella (on 7/9/08)
@ V Vella (ta Hal Buzbiez) You are being very heartless, yes the feast should have been cancelled or at least should have been held like the one at Zabbar a couple of years back when the only exteral celebrations held were the pilgrimage of the statue of our lady through the streets no bands no fireworks just the statue and the usual entourage .That is respect, but I blame the church and greed for this.

It's a pity to hear comments with regards to pagan festivities and fireworks such as the law is there to serve and protect. Yes, the law is there, but to serve and protect the public in general from those fanatics who do not care of the rights of others who want to leave in peace. Although I'm also from Naxxar, I have to say that I am disappointed of the way the Victory Band club, the church and to a lesser extent the Peace band Club from the way they have tackled this year's feast celebrations at Naxxar. I together with a number of other Naxxar residents feel ashamed of being a resident of Naxxar. This year's feast should have been cancelled. Why was it so difficult for these band clubs to hear what the majority of the Naxxar residents wanted. Yet, There is still time.
J Farrugia (on 6/9/08)
In response to Rita Spiteri' contribution, I would advice her that banning fireworks is never a solution. I myself love fireworks. One cannot recklessly just put a total ban on fireworks without summing up the consequences. What about our tourism product? Have you ever taught of it? What about the band clubs, Are they now obsolete for you? What about the volunteers? Should they go back to their homes, and loose their god given talents? Never. The law is there to serve and protect. Sometimes (through the fault of man) it doesn't protect life and limbs, neither to those who manufacture these works of art. Sometimes there are also innocent people involved,. In my mind there is the Fgura couple who after years of toil and sacrifice and through the fault of a criminal mind, lost everything and are still lampa stampa. No one has helped them to make their lives as it was. And the guy is still running wild. Well that's the law even though it's an ass. But please never ever utter the words 'ban fireworks' otherwise I will cry!
Noel Gauci (on 6/9/08)
Could any one tell me if any Victoria Band Club Supporter or Fanatic have passed from Triq Hal Dghejf at Naxxar (the place where the accident took place) with his Red T- Shirt front Print 'GAME OVER'!!!????? Is this what Mr V. Debono (VBC Comitee member) meant when he said that they gonna show a sign of mouring in their marches? OR maybe with their last version of their CD issued recently?????
Rita Spiteri (on 6/9/08)
In my opinion ban all fireworks after the latest find this week in a container dangering many lives(the ship and harbour workers the roads which the container was driven through etc) I heard that you need a special chemical that needs a permit to produce fireworks. If Malta bans fireworks we would not need this thingimebob chemical and that would REDUCE illegal fireworks.
Warren Camilleri (on 6/9/08)
hmmm as i recall in most villages when incidents like these happens the feast is canceled like a "penitenza" in confession... but in luqa when their priest fell in a man hole the feast was canceled in his memory... in naxxar its at full swing... i live across from sina, pawlu and the bugeja families place my neighbors the ones that have a burnt house... i just can't understand how the "kappilan" has no consonance... how about using all the money spent making the decorations, the lighting, the "chikciforgu" by rebuilding the ppls lives that was altered by a lunatic who was very stupid!!!
John Schembri (on 5/9/08)
At Zurrieq it is business as usual after the tragedy which left two victims in the St Catherine's fireworks factory some months ago.
Lawrence Calleja (on 5/9/08)
I am sure that the Victory band Club and the Peace band Club are feeling at ease with celebrating this year's feast. there was only one solution. Cancel the feast. This is what a number of Naxxar residents wanted. I pledge the Victory band Club committee to show some respoect to us, a number of which are also supporters of this band club. My advice to the Victory band club is that if they really want and need to continue with the festivities, at least show respect to us the residents of naxxar by not organising the so called marci tal-brijju. These are totally out of place. I am a friend of a number of the Victory band Club committee and I am sure that down deep inside their hearts, they really want to show some type of respect.
joanna jibiri (on 5/9/08)
i would like to send the deepest love to the family of sina especially the kids. I'm sorry that your fellow village members are so selfish and just after 6 months from this tragedy they kept on going with the festivities. nowadays some people just live for the feast. which is stupid. its like grabbing a bunch of euros and putting them on fire. its just a waste of money. but if only it was waste of money it was one thing but every year were seeing people lose their life and nothing is done about it. but at least let us be civilised and caring for one another I'm disappointed the way you are treating this family. shame on all naxxar people. who forgot so soon.
Martin Spiteri (on 5/9/08)
@ V Vella, you disgust me when I read your shameless comments. How could you be so cold and without any sense of feeling. The whole feast is a farce. The Parish Priest should have ordered its cancellation the same day the tragedy occured. When the Parish Priest of Luqa died months before in an accident where fireworks were not involved the Curia cancelled it without even asking the band clubs, to show how prompt the church can be when it comes to its own dues. Clearly an unfortunate mother is worthless here, and I am sure that the fireworks found in the basement illegally in the band club were for Gharghur feast or Mosta( sarcastic) . Parish Priest Ivan should have cancelled the whole thing months ago not adding more pain to the living relatives . Our Lady of Sorrows should be more appropriate and black drapes more in line. I sympatise with the Victims relatives. Disgusting!!!! Shame on all those who will support this years feast Our Lady of Disaster, in Naxxar.
Charles Falzon (on 5/9/08)
I totally agree with cancelling all outdoor festivities for this year at Naxxar.
Otherwise there would not be a true manifestation of solidarity.

By holding any outdoor festivities would be tantamount to excluding this family from village life.
M. Borg (on 5/9/08)
May I express my greatest sympaties to all the family of Sina Sammut. It was truly a shock that such a young life has been ended so suddenly. I am sure that it will take a very long time for the wound to heal. My extended solidarity to those families who were left homeless.
Nevertheless, my curiosity was taunted by the great "publicity" that the Naxxar feast is being given this year and I did go over yesterday to see what's happening. May I say that for most of the streets the band did not play, whenever it was in close proximity of one of Sina's relative.

I also did not find of bad taste the T-shirts bearing the "GAME OVER" writing. Do not forget that the opposing band has been closed down. It is only natural that the supporters taunt their "competitors" with this fact. It does not have anything to do with the tragic accident. Also, the band did NOT launch any CD this year. This was confirmed by a member of the band's committee.

The march ended with the supporters singing AVE MARIA! The usual fireworks display was cancelled. Anything disrespectful in these events?!
C.Buttigieg (on 5/9/08)
@ V.Vella
What do you consider evidence? Are illegal fireworks in the basement of the band club not enough? Since the organisers of the fiesta did not hear the requests of the people to cancel the outside celebrations, it is up to the people of Naxxar to respect their poor neighbour whose life was taken so tragically and completely ignore the festive activities. They should all get together and organise a spiritual meeting in the church and offer their prayers for the souls of the victims. That would be the only right thing to do in these circumstances.
v.vella (on 5/9/08)
I am another V.Vella not the one of hal buzbiez fame!
So the band clubs are 'toning down their performance this year out of respect? Are they going to fit their instruments with silencers? are they going to play funerary marches? Isn't it a shame on all the christians walking this land that the victims are still without a home? The dead victim's mother can't bear to look out of her window at the street decorations. Imagine her feelings when she hears the boom boom of petards in a few days' time if they have not already started, knowing that it was the manufacture of similar explosives that robbed her of her daughter. think of the husband and children of the victim as you are swigging beer and carousing infront of the march. and then go in front of Maria Bambina and thank her that it was not your life that was destroyed six months ago. I'm sure Mary would understand. Perhaps you can donate something to calm your concience. or you can do something honorable and boycott the feast out of respect for your sister who was taken away from your community.
V Vella (on 5/9/08)
There is no evidence that the illegal fireworks were for the Naxxar feast. From what we know, he was a sole person who might have easily have been working for other feasts around Malta.

What this tragedy should make us do is to push the authorities to control the manufacturing of fireworks (not ban them either!) and safe some lives. Unfortunetly, cancelling the feast will not erase what has already happened.
M. Debono (on 5/9/08)
@ Mr. V. Vella

The incident at Naxxar is directly related to the "festa bonanza". Your "example" is NOT related directly, has it has no meaning at all in this scenario.

Totally agree with these street decorations, the least, Naxxar community should have done is to completely stop the "outside" festa and concentrate on the liturgical aspect of the festa. Where is the community sense of belonging? boq! Do the clubs impose conditions and dictate what to do or not to do in the festa program? Where is the parish priest? Does he have a role in this "community"?

It is true, one has to get on his feet as quickly as possible, when tragedies happen, not to fall in depression and mental sufferness. However, the community ought to respect their grieved villagers and cancel the outdoor festa. Take example from the "Xlukkajri" after the Shimshar tradegy. The festa was cancelled w/o any discussing of "toning down" any of the program. That is what i call a true sense of community. Naxxar ... you are way behind in this. Get moving!!!!
J Farrugia (on 5/9/08)
@ Victor Vella and others: One must not mix one thing with the other. Let's be sensible. The case of Naxxar was the work of criminal activity by a person and a band club is also being investigated. That is where the village has to stop and instead of pointing fingers, at least cancel the whole festa for that year. No one is going to bring the dead from their grave. But a show of solidarity with the victims is a must. On the other hand one cannot pretend that a club member dies in a driving accident and the club has to cancel its feast. In fact in a particular village, such a member of a club died during the festa week and this particular club suspended its celebrations for one day - on the day of the funeral. But should there be a tragedy in locality A, one must not pretend that those celebrating a feast in locality B to suspend it's festa, which comes only once a year.
Jennifer Cosaitis (on 5/9/08)
@ V Vella - X'ghandu x'jaqsam ???? For goodness sake this woman's life was taken by a man producing fireworks for the feast illegally in his garage. What has your story got to do with it?
Rita Camilleri (on 5/9/08)
@V. Vella, the "accident" at Hal-Buzbiez took place on the zebra crossing NOT BECAUSE of the zebra crossing. The accident at Naxxar happened BECAUSE of the feast, because of selfish, people playing with fire (excuse the pun!!) in built up areas. These people lost their loved one, their home (please note I said home and not house) and everything in their lives because of the FESTA!! I am sure our beloved Holy Mother is very proud of us purer then pure CATHOLICS!!!
k grech (on 5/9/08)
I sympathize with you and your family and also totally agree that the feast ought to have been cancelled as a sign of mourning and respect or else only the procession with the statue of our lady of victories should be held.
I also agree with Reuben Zammit that the people attending yesterdays victory band club march were wearing red t-shirts with the words “GAME OVER’ written on the front. This is defiantly no sign of respect and also the cd that they launched this year does not have anything to do with the feast and i don't know how the victory band club's committee approved it. I also feel that the decision taken by the committee of the other band club to cancel all the marches for this year was a good decision.
josef sammut (on 5/9/08)
@ V.Vella
Your reasoning is completely out!
A traffic accident is one thing and manufacturing fireworks for the so called ‘festa’ is another . In my opinion, yes carrying on with the Naxxar’s festa this year was has been a show of lack of solidarity. Could you look in Sina’s son and daughter’s eyes and tell them that five months has been enough? Shame on you, and on the large institution that is behind the organising.
V Vella (on 5/9/08)
Picture this: a 30-year old husband and father tragically loses his life in a traffic accident, when a reckless driver puts him down while crossing over a zebra cross at Hal Busbiez. This was five months ago. His family is rightfully distraught. The feast at Hal Busbiez is six months from now. Should the feast at Hal Busbiez be cancelled?
Anthony Mercieca (on 5/9/08)
The Naxxar incident is very interesting and is a real challage to the values we as Maltese and like me who is a Christian. The same thing happened when there was the explosion of the Al faroud and the Malta Song Festival went ahead with the presenter stating the "show must go on". This is life. As a Maltese Christian my show would have been that the festa funds would be directed to those hurt. Would adopt a sombre attitude putting enphasis on spirituality.

This is at least what I understand by SOLIDARITY and being CHRISTIAN - otherwise those who think otherwise only justify the claim that festa are just an exteriorization of pagan instincts

G Sultana (on 5/9/08)
Yes the feast should have been cancelled, at least the outside activities. It was really disturbing yesterday, to see the band playing cheerful music just a few meters away from the accident area. And the photo published is shocking, really no respect to this mother who lost her daughter to the village festa.
Jan Mifsud (on 5/9/08)
The Naxxar people should either refrain from attending the band celebrations or should boo while the bands play.
Reuben Zammit (on 5/9/08)
@Helen Grech
Most of the people from Naxxar or rather those who still have a conscious not only deeply sympathize with you and your family but also totally agree that the feast ought to have been cancelled as a sign of mourning and respect. I also find very disturbing and ironic the fact that most of the people attending yesterdays march were wearing red t-shirts with the words “GAME OVER’ written on the front. This is defiantly no sign of respect.
At a tangent to all this, we all recently heard about the crackdown of littering to enforce regulations and keep the streets clean, an exercise spearheaded by Chris Said. Even the amount of fines given out in the first few days of this ‘crackdown’ was given prominence in local news. Yet yesterday some of the streets of Naxxar, through which the village band passed, where littered with shredded papers and confetti though police were present. Isn’t this littering too? One gets a fine if one throws a cigarette butt in the road , yet can dump a whole bag of shredded papers on a village band and get away with it!
Maruska Agius (on 5/9/08)
No respect for these families!! The outside festivities should have been cancelled like it was cancelled the feast of Birkirkara in 2007!! As respect to these families, no one should attend this festa!
J Farrugia (on 5/9/08)
The Naxxar band Clubs are really out of sinc with the whole of the naxxar population. They should not only 'tone down' the celebrations in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, but they should have forfeited the feast completely. There is no reason to celebrate in Naxxar this year. They are just continuing to hurt those already suffering from someone's illegal and criminal actions. Would it have made a difference to them not holding the feast for this one year? And for heaven's sake let not one blame the church authorities. They have absolutely nothing to do with outside festivities.
