Roadworks along the Marsa waterfront were delayed for five months due to an oil leak which remained unresolved, the locality's mayor, Francis Debono, said yesterday.
At a press conference held in front of the local Regatta Club, Mr Debono said it was shameful that the oil leak was not addressed.
The oil was discovered when road works began in early March, close to the Marsa Regatta Club, located about 200 metres from the Marsa Power station.
An Enemalta report, dated August 4, confirmed the presence of oil. The report also noted that the road might require digging up in order to remove the oil, citing this as the reason why the work was put on hold.
The mayor said it was "shameful" that an oil leak, costing money and causing a public nuisance, was disregarded for five months and that an area already suffering ample environmental harm was allowed to deteriorate further. The mayor called on the authorities in question to take immediate action to address and resolve the matter.
