The Times leads with the discovery of fireworks in an export container on a ship in Grand Harbour. It also says the government is cautiously optimistic of agreement in the talks on Malta Shipyards.

The Malta Independent says there has been a 31 percent increase in immigrant arrivals so far this year, breaking all records.

l-orizzont leads with the discovery of part of the head of a mouse by a nurse in the hospital canteen.

MaltaToday leads with the same story, saying there was Mouse Mayhem at the hospital canteen and no one went to the canteen yesterday.

In-Nazzjon says 850 pensioners have been engaged by the private sector following measures introduced in the last budget.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Gordon Brown's plan to revive the housing market was greeted with almost universal condemnation amid warnings that it was unlikely to help home buyers.

The Financial Times also looks at the new Government move and the threat of recession. The Organisation for Economic Development and Cooperation said Britain would be the only major economy to go into recession by the end of the year.

The Sun says the Arab Sheikh who has bought Manchester City plans a money-no-object raid for the world's biggest players - including £134m for Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo.

Centropolitan says the European Parliament has endorsed a critical report which says the European Union's system for handling asylum-seekers is unfair. It plans to submit recommendations on how standardise protection for applicants across Europe.

According to Pravda, Russia has criticised the European Union for threatening to postpone talks on a new partnership deal over the war in Georgia. The Russian Foreign Ministry said it cannot agree with biased statements regarding Russia in the final declaration of the summit.

USA today says President Bush has given his full backing to Republican presidential candidate John McCain's, praising his independence and character.

Washington Post reports that US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice embarks on her first visit to Libya later this week to become the first US Secretary to visit Libya in 55 years

New Orleans’ Times-Picayune quotes city mayor Ray Nagin saying that the mandatory evacuation of the city, declared in advance of Hurricane Gustav, will end at midnight on Thursday, allowing residents to return. Nagin said it would take time before all the city's hospitals, water and sewage services and power were fully operational. Meanwhile in Haiti 19 people have been killed by Tropical Storm Hanna.

Cyprus Mail says rival leaders of the divided island have launched last-ditch reunification talks.

O Globo reports that Brazilian police have rescued a man who was locked up for three days in the boot of his own car. Two heavily armed men abducted an estate agent on Friday to use his car for “a series of burglaries” but abandoned it when it ran out of petrol. The police said the victim was unhurt “but shaken, and in need of a good bath”.

Salem News says that a man, who is ranked No. 5 by the International Federation of Competitive Eating, stuffed himself with 5.2 kilos of spaghetti in 10 minutes to claim victory in an eating contest. Bob Shoudt won $2,500 (€1,700) at the inaugural Skyline Chili Spaghetti eat-off in Ohio.
