Man 'obsessed' with former girlfriend
Massimo Tivifini, 39, of Msida, was remanded in custody today after he pleaded not guilty to harassing Eleonora Camilleri, holding her against her will and threatening to use violence against her.
He was also accused of violating previous conditions set to him by a court.
Prosecutor Anthony Cachia told the court that Mr Tivifini was obsessed with Ms Camilleri and this was the third incident that the accused had allegedly committed. He warned that unless action was taken against him, the issue could escalate.
Legal Aid Renzo Portella Flores pointed out that in the past, Ms Camilleri had paid bail for Mr Tivifini.
Dr Andy Ellul, who is appearing parte civile for Ms Camilleri, said the accused had violated various orders of the courts and even his probation officer was concerned.

Johann Mifsud, because she was scared of him. If she didn't pay his bail, he would find her out after his release and pay her back. That's why. I hope that the courts will drum inside his little head, that once a relationship is over, he can forget that his girlfriend ever existed and move on.

Why not send him to Italy? Stalking is a serious crime and if the offense is repeated there is no chance of obtaining any suspended sentence. Of course, being in the EU has its disadvantages but there are special agreements between governments where criminals are concerned, harassers included. Perhaps the Prosecution should follow this up more seriously.

I have seen similar cases reported in UK and when the offence is repetitive, there is serious reason for grave concern for the safety of the person being stalked and harassed. I share the prosecutor's concern for the safety of the victim. The accused should be undergoing therapy for his obsession.
