Manifest danger in Ta' Żwejt, San Ġwann
It was with great interest that I read the letter by Noel Galea of Żurrieq (September 1) with the title Manifest Danger For Children. We too get some constructors who choose not to adhere to health and safety regulations.
A hazardous site in Sir Luigi Castelletti Street in Ta' Żwejt, San Ġwann was reported several times by our council to avoid a fatal accident. Do we need to have a tragedy to act in this small island?
Most people think that their local council has got a super potential on other entities, but it seems local councils are treated just like any other resident. Until the authorities wake up and do something about this mounting problem, we have no option but to wait and hope that we don't get any accidents in these life-threatening areas.

The San Gwann local council is toothless even where it has total control. Take the case of the skips contractor who empties skips in Ta Zwejt at 4:40 a.m on weekends when he should do so between 07:00 a.m. and 17:00 p.m. What a waste of time and taxpayers' money.

Don't agree with you. Until the authorities wake up the councils could (through their own funds) put in the necessary amends (short term ones) to avoid danger to their respective people in the area and visitors.
For example. How many times do you see (there is one in Rabat at the moment) signs on dangerous roads telling us that the road falls within the responsibility of the governmnet. The council washes its obligations like that ? What the council should do, is through its funds, make short term, cost effective, intelligent amends to minimise the danger even on roads not directly under their responsibility...then make a whole cacophony in the media to red face the central authority. The upshot would be that the council shows that apart from anything else, it cares about the public.
