Ex-boxing champion jailed

Former WBO featherweight champion Scott Harrison was jailed for eight months for assaulting his girlfriend and drink-driving.

The 31-year-old boxer received a two-month sentence for attacking Stacy Gardener and a police officer in May, as well as six months for driving nearly four times over the legal limit in Glasgow last week, the Press Association reported.

Harrison, from Cambuslang, near Glasgow, had pleaded guilty to both offences and was sentenced in separate hearings at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

His lawyer had told the court the boxer accepted he had an alcohol problem and was getting help.

In December 2006 Harrison gave up his WBO featherweight title shortly after spending five weeks in a Spanish jail on assault charges.

The troubled boxer had held the title for four years but failed to cut his weight in time for a challenge match.

He had already pulled out of another title defence earlier that year due to alcohol problems and depression.
