Nature Trust has warned that unless action towards the conservation of Dwejra is taken within two months, it will report the matter to the EU.

It pointed out that EU funds were used for the conservation of Dwejra but since the EU Life project, which started in 2004, came to an end in March last year the area had fallen into degradation.

“Without commitment and a management agreement the site is degrading fast. Restored rubble walls are starting to fall and there is no round the clock enforcement and monitoring.”

The NGO said it planned to continue working on the conservation of the site and proceed to obtain the UNESCO World Heritage status for Dwejra. However, because of the situation, it has decided not to proceed with its efforts until conservation commitment by the authorities was shown.
