Over the years we have heard a lot about derogations given by the European Union to member countries. I am wondering whether the same principle of derogation could be applied as a solution to the Irish no to the Treaty of Lisbon.

If Ireland were to be exempt from the consequences of the Treaty, then the Irish vote would be respected.

However, Ireland then should not be able to participate fully in any decision making which emanates from the same Treaty by using its vote.

The Irish must realise, as I am sure they do, that a yes or a no vote on any important issue carries advantages and disadvantages.
