San Ġiljan break their duck

Exiles reach Division Two Knock-Out final

San Giljan 7
Sirens 6

(2-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-2)

San Ġiljan Tropicana Juices managed to overcome one of their 'peers' in their final league match and thus break their duck when recording a close victory over Sirens Centro Casalinga in front of a handful of spectators.

The duel between these teams had little significance other than prestige and a testing exercise prior to their commitments in knock-out competition next week.

While Sirens were without Arpad Babay and Predrag Zimonjic, both indisposed, the Saints had to omit the injured Vladimir Kretkovic, besides having other units missing from their team list.

San Ġiljan were the perkier side in a low scoring first session which saw them take a 2-0 lead before Sirens trimmed the deficit.

Goals were again at a premium in the second quarter with both teams showing a deficiency in a second punch. Sirens leveled matters only for San Ġiljan to regain the lead. Towards the end of the session Sirens equalised.

Young Ryan Mock gave Sirens the lead for the first time soon after ends were changed. A muffed penalty caused the northerners dear as San Ġiljan again regained the advantage.

Two goals at each end in the last quarter kept the Saints' noses in front until the end for a deserved victory.

Exiles 18
Otters 6

(4-0, 3-1, 7-1, 4-4)

In the first match of the day Exiles Elle et Vire booked a place in the final of the Division Two Knock-Out competition when they easily dismissed Otters.

As it turned out the Sliema team, who made sure of the championship a fortnight ago, had an easy passage to the final in a competition which could have had a less lop-sided draw.

Exiles took little time to get into their stride and by the halfway stage they had already taken a 7-1 lead to extend it to 14-2 by the three-quarter mark.

Even though playing without Aurelien Cousin, Joe Caruana Dingli's team continued to dictate matters with Michael Rizzo having the biggest say in his side's 18-6 victory with seven goals.
