The current emissions test allows buses to reach a maximum engine speed of 2,500 revolutions per minute (rpm) rather than 3,000 rpm as stated by Public Transport Association president Victor Spiteri, the Malta Standards Authority (MSA) said yesterday.

"The actual requirement of the test is actually more conservative than the figure of 2,700 revs being suggested by Mr Spiteri himself," said the authority. The criterion further specifies that during the test, the engine speed is to be increased to 2,500 rpm or half the maximum engine speed if lower.

"The MSA, therefore, reiterates that the existing tests conducted by the ADT are correct and an accurate way of enforcing legislation on emissions (and) sees no reasons for Mr Spiteri's objections to this."
