I have been on holiday to Malta for the past 30 years and recently read that the government has sponsored Sheffield Wednesday FC to advertise Malta as a leading holiday destination.

I feel that before any sort of promotion takes place, local councils need to seriously invest in cleaning the island, especially the beaches. I am appalled with the standard of cleanliness in comparison to other European destinations. In Birżebbuġa there was an assortment of litter on the beach including sanitary towels, nappies and excrement.

Additionally, as a result of the feast, there were the remains of fireworks.

The Maltese are known for their standards of hygiene and cleanliness inside their homes but they neglect their own beautiful island.

Before investing in advertising, money should be spent on cleaning up the beaches at least. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising and as a result, the tourism industry the island relies on so much will thrive.
