Four police officers to face drug possession charge

Four police officers are expected to be arraigned in the coming days over drug possession.

Two of the officers, who are sergeants, were at the centre of an investigation and were found to be in possession of a small amount of cannabis when their homes in Senglea were raided.

They were both suspended and criminal proceedings against them have already started.

In two other separate cases, a constable working at the police headquarters got reported to her superiors after she bragged that she had been doing some designer drugs at a party.

She resigned along with another 23-year-old constable who was arrested during the recent Santa Marija raids at a party in Rabat.

Both the officers "admitted to having abused of illicit drugs while not on duty and criminal charges have been instituted against them," a spokesman for the police said.

What this sad story highlights is just how far drug abuse has become the norm in Malta and in Europe. Drugs available at a private party in Rabat. What is being done to stop the bulk importation of cocaine, which common rumour claims is used regularly across society, and is a costly commodity ? Mike Turner

While I agree with with comments written by Reuben Balzan, I'd add that even police officers are human being, inclusive of being subject to the same mistakes as any other citizens but also with the same rights as anybody else, yes they do have & are subject to the same needs as anyone else. Anyone who cares to differ or is awed by such news only reflects that kind of archaic mentality where one used to think a certain members society were above certain temptations. No matter how old habits could die hard, people of the clergy, pharmacists, police or army are neither above or below anyone else, not even by a millimeter. It's just another role in society.

While it is shocking when members of the police force commit a crime (assuming that the officers in question are in fact eventually found guilty), it is also commendable that these persons are investigated and arraigned.

Let's give credit where credit is due.
