Way out for the Irish
Several weeks ago the Irish people voted against the EU reform treaty. The European Affairs Minister, Dick Roche, is reported to have said that another referendum would be held in the future.
I believe that probably this would be a useless exercise. Most, if not all, European member states who ratified this treaty did so by a parliamentary vote. Maybe the Irish Constitution does not permit its parliament to approve such a type of legislation except by a referendum. So the best way to accept this EU reform treaty is by amending the Irish Constitution. However that's easier said than done!

If the EU was a truly democratic institution it would have encouraged rather than discouraged all member states to ratify the Lisbon Treaty by holding a referendum. It is a known fact that if they had done such a thing the Lisbon Treaty would have been rejected by many of the member states.

You ought to be ashamed of yourself to suggest that the people be ignored more than they presently being ignored in decision making by the EU.
The present situation where the citizens of the member states are being ignored whether they want the Union to continue as its unelected leaders want it to is dictatorship at its best.

Tthe kind of thing you are advocating is normally called 'by the back door'. The Irish will not stand for that and rightfully so,unlike us I may say, like sheep blindly being led down some alley or other with never a murmur. What you suggest is gutless, spineless and despicable to the 'enth degree.

So what about the right of the people. EU speaks a lot how it would be nice that more people are involved and be part of all this big family. Then when the people in one more than one country expressed there ideas on certain issues we just try to suffocate them. Why did not the other countries as well gave the right to the citizens to express there belief on the Lisbon Treaty (camouflaged EU constitution. Or is this the next step toward the formation of the Soviet Union of EU. Where are the nice words on freedom and democracy...........?!
