MHRA welcomes success of litter lout crackdown
The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association yesterday expressed its satisfaction at the success of a joint 10-day pilot project carried out between the police, the Malta Environment and Planning Authority and local wardens to crack down on littering and dumping.
The association said it strongly believes the country's main asset is its "product" and any action to put Malta's house in order is welcome both for its own sake and those who visit the island.
Calling the project a breath of fresh air, MHRA president Kevin De Cesare said: "The government must support and take every opportunity to invest heavily in this area to ensure cleanliness, reduce noise pollution and upgrade the product.
"It is important that a campaign similar to the one that ran a few years ago on the media is repeated to encourage the public to keep Malta clean. Schools should also adopt awareness about this problem to instill in the very young the need to keep our islands clean."

"..to encourage the public to keep Malta clean..." Please also emphasize the cleanliness of public toilets. Some public toilets are old and need to be ungraded.
Yesterday, I was at Valletta with some friends. We had to "stop breathing" while entering the main gate to avoid the stench of horse urine where the horse drawn carriages were stationed.

Like a ten day 'pilot project' is going to make a difference . . . ! This sort of thing should be sustained and ongoing . . . what is the point of a rare sporadic effort and cleanup if people are allowed to return to their disgusting habits as soon as it's over?? When are the authorities going to take their responsibilities seriously??(!)
Oh and whilst on the subject, when is somebody going to stop the lout that walks his dog along the side of St. James Cavalier, past Castille and on through Merchant Street in Valletta every morning?? Or are we supposed to consider a fresh steaming dog-turd to be an essential part of our urban environment??
