Sliema ASC waterpolo stalwart and former Malta national team coach Frans Frendo passed away on Saturday evening, aged 83.

Frendo was a Sliema clubman and won various honours while playing for the Blues during a successful span between the late 1950s and 1960s. He was ever-present for the team and had the knack of shooting at goal and scoring goals in his own inimitable way.

After deciding to quit playing, Frendo took up coaching and was in charge of Sliema for several years before getting the job of national coach from the ASA in the 1970s.

Besides waterpolo, during his career in sports administration, Frendo also served on the Sliema Wanderers FC committee.

Frendo's funeral will be held tomorrow, at 9.30 a.m., at the Stella Maris Parish Church, Sliema.
