It is a shame that people who would like to play squash are being forced to join private clubs. Malta only has two public courts at the National Pool complex in Msida, both booked weeks in advance and till late at night.

The pool manager has gone out of his way to facilitate coaching so that players can learn and play safely, but due to the lack of courts, bookings can only be made in person and must be paid in advance. If you are a university student this is difficult enough, if you live in several miles away it is a complete turn-off.

There is a huge boom in squash players as the sport is attractive for many reasons, especially as it offers players an aggressive work-out in a relatively short period of time and is not weather-dependent.

Why should students and low-income earners be forced to join private clubs to play squash? Will the new sports centres we are hearing so much about have squash courts? Has the Malta Squash Association been contacted?
