The concept design of the artistic band stand is the work of Salvu Bugeja. At the very beginning Mr Bugeja contacted the painter Paul Camilleri-Cauchi to explore the design further by introducing 11 147 cm X 100 cm paintings to complement the intricate sculptured wooden features with which the band stand is decorated.
Mr Camilleri-Cauchi developed the idea by executing the paintings on canvas. They all bear allegories of music in monochromatic tones so that harmony in colour and general design would be achieved. A further six smaller paintings have the subject of musical puttini which are found mounted on the front prospective.
The 17 paintings were executed over a four-year period at the studio of the artist Camilleri-Cauchi. I had the privilege to witness their preparation and execution.
The ceremony of the inauguration of the band stand on July 30, 2008, is the culmination of the successful result of the excellent coordination among the artists involved which strived together to produce a work of art making one proud of the abilities of the Maltese artistic talents.
