UHM concern over reported tourism decline
The Union Haddiema Maghqudin has appealed to hoteliers and other operators in the tourism industry to give value for money in order to ensure that Malta remains competitive.
The UHM issued its statement following reports that tourist arrivals dropped in July and August after having risen earlier in the year.
The union said one of the reasons being mentioned for the decline was the high rates being charged by hotels. A loss of competitiveness would have consequences on tourist numbers, businesses and jobs, the union said.
It also urged the government to ensure that the facilities it was responsible for, including the roads, were kept clean and well maintained, since these too had an impact on tourism.

D falzon...Actually yes, I do share my opinions, and I must admit that I enjoy doing so.
But I can guarantee one thing, I have not been commissioned, paid or requested to write by anyone. Rather simple isn't it?
I am not a delegate, not even a member of any political party.
Of course, it suits people like you to try to deflect criticism by trying to imply that I am a stooge.
When I asked the same question to the blue eyed zombies, well, I got no answer., albeit one of them had already admitted, in a weird way that he only writes when requested. Strange.
What is stranger is that people like you are happier TRYING(and failing) to shoot the messenger, and totally ignoring the message. Strange again!
Well...It is a rather clingy claim to fame, but it seems that the zombies would rather answer me than comment on the articles....Does that mean that they're giving me so m,uch importance...?

Everybody has opinions. Jerry J seems to have many of them though, on every article of The Times, once, twice, three times. Get commission from kiddo call me Joseph and his 16 year old voting kiddies?
chill man.

We are not surprised, after three lovely visits to your country we decided to visit you a little later this year.
Never again, the locals where still nice and friendly, but the so called students totally ruined our holiday.
what a shambles, are they counted in your arrivals? if so you had better get some more because its Cyprus for us next year.

I am not surprised that the numbers are low. I am surprised how some tourist actually come back. The island is overrun by uncontrolled building sites. Construction is everywhere. In Mellieha village, there are three four star hotels. All three of them overlook tower cranes. One of them has two tower cranes hovering over its rooftop pool.
Our hotels are grossly over rated. Air conditioning is constantly being turned off. The quality is mediocre. The management is simply after a quick buck. MTA needs to take the bull by the horn and start showing some muscle if we are ever to have a product.

We can blame the Euro, we can blame the government, we can blame whatever. We all know what the truth is - our tourism product sucks from beginning to end. There is no courtesy on the island, we overcharge like hell (if not double charging like that hotel in Gozo), litter everywhere, unbearable traffick, bouncers beating tourists, compulsive construction, pollution, excessive noises (including excessive fireworks)... its one big anarchy. And we wonder why! We should wonder how we had it good for so long! The blame is only us, all of us and no one else. Have we already forgotten the public transport strike? Have we forgotten the scenes of tourists walking with their bags in sweltering sun? And we don't even care - we don't even care that competition is cut throat and that in a split of a second a tourist could chose another destination. We can spend millions marketing Malta, but unless each and everyone of does his part, we will always remain a mediocre little island – we will be sending tourists back home with a poor image and a bad advert! The tragedy is that we really have an unpolished gem. Biskuttelli f’halq il-hmir!

@Jeremy, Man do you live on another planet? Just wait for the results at the end of the month. Red light on tourism this summer was flashing since February and our men at MTA were busy justifying their Mistra report, and finalising the Sheffield sponsorship. We the stock holders of st Julians we can do with a sponsorship to repair our roads, buy bins and fix light poles. You are paranoid with our or better statment your goverment. Wait and see my friends with results you will be shocked. This weekend is the final weekend for students.Next Monday the long ugly winter will start. We are still in August and some hotels they are not even managing it on 50% occupancy. Wait my friend before you talk.

Why is the UHM concerned about the low influx of tourists this summer. Everyone predicted it last year after all the Hotels filled up their rooms with noisy students and ruining 'normal' tourists holidays. I work with tourists everyday and I've been hearing people grumbling about students every day for the past 4 years. Strangely enough, no one does anything but then when statistics start coming out everybody starts worrying. IT'S TOO LATE NOW!! News travels fast by internet!!
