Three weekends of activity at Bugibba promenade
Parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco yesterday also visited the offices of Valletta Waterfront operators Viset and chatted with cruise passengers.
The Malta Tourism Authority will be holding activities for tourists and locals alike at Bugibba Promenade over three weekends starting today.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Mario de Marco, said this would be a new activity aimed mostly at drawing tourists to Bugibba, and may be repeated in the winter and next summer if it succeeds.
Bugibba promenade will be a pedestrian zone during the evenings of the three weekends, but parking arrangements have been made near Fra Ben and at Sirens pitch (against a small charge for the latter). There will be a free bus shuttle service. Route buses will continue to transit Bugibba promenade but their speed will be restricted to 10km/h.
The MTA activities, from 8.30 p.m. to midnight, will include music, folk singing, bands, face painting and animators. There will also be performances by a bag-pipe band.
The activities are being held in conjunction with St Paul’s Bay Council.

Excellent idea with one minor drawback that needs to be sorted - it is just too difficult to get to on a Friday or Saturday night.
Basically the roads are gridlocked from about 5pm until around 10pm every Fri and Sat along the coastroad and the Naxxar Road leading to Kennedy Grove.
This could be made less of a problem at minor expense by making the junction at Kennedy Grove a NO RIGHT TURN from all directions and save tons of fuel as well as the stress and frustration of traffic moving at less than walking speed.

Well done, good idea to liven Bugibba up at the weekend. Only the bus route has to be changed for those few hours to avoid accidents. Also an alternative route for the cars which are now going through Simon street, a secondary road has been turned into a main road. Fumes going into homes which at this time of year cannot keep the windows closed. A few minor changes and everyone could be happy.

True the buses should be given alternative routes to leave the streets completely free........nonethless as a resident of the area I cannot but commend such initiatives that go a long way in reviving Bugibba and from which the business community here benefits from so much.
Good work Mr.DeMarco.....and also Josef formosa Gauci who are both working tirelessly to make sure we reap the best results in tourism. may initiatives like these spill in the shoulder and low seasons too.
The next step is to do something with the ex-Sta marija/San Anton and International Club hotel sites.........the former turning into an eyesore and the latter already one!!!!!!!

For Gods sake lets pull at one rope for once!! Why do we have to find the needle in the haystack everytime the government tries to come up with an initiative???

Last weekend they did the same thing. pedestrian zone with buses. It was a nightmare, buses cropping out of nowhere, fumes galore, it's still a mystery no one got injured!

So its not a pedestrian zone then. Its a bus lane. And we all know how quickly these pass and how much they care for other road users, especially pedestrians.
