Malta recognises Kosovo

No one is saying that Kosovo and the Albanians living there did not suffer under Milosevic rule. However using this to give independence to the region of Kosovo opens the way for other such break away regions to declare independence; such as South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
It is clear from the following CNN article that these two break away regions are using Kosovo as a precedent of having a country declared Independent even when this country is not recognized by the United Nations. Thanks to Kosovo these two countries will now be recognized as independent from Russia and thus making the unification of Georgia impossible putting this region in turmoil for the years to come (http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/08/25/russia.vote/index.html).
So the North America Indians suffered years of suffer under the US government; they were put in concentration camps, sometimes systematically killed as well. So what? Should we (Malta) now recognize some region in the US as Independent? Note that at the moment there a well sized Indian community which is asking this (http://www.snowwowl.com/peoplesioux.html). Why don’t recognize them as well while at it? Didn't they also suffer?

I think Malta did the right thing by recognising Kosovo. Kosovo IS a nation and deserved its independence after almost a century of massacres and suppression of freedom. It's very easy to express opinions when all you know about it is what you've heard on TV or read in newspapers... We Albanians and the Kosovars know very well what they've been through.

The situation in South Ossetia and Abkhazia is no different then the situation in Kosovo. In Kosovo the majority of the people are Albanians while in South Ossetia and Abkhazia the majority of the people are Russians. The people living in these three regions (using referendums) all wanted independence. So why are we accepting the independence of the region of Kosovo and not of that the regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia? However the question here is why did Tonio Borg formally recognised Kosovo yesterday? Couldn't he wait another month and see what the UN had to say about the subject. Truth is that it is very hard that Kosovo will ever be internationally recognised because only the UN can legally recognise the independence of a country and Russia will definitely veto that. As I said in previous post over here I do not agree that South Ossetia and Abkhazia separate from Georgia however most probably these two regions will receive a similar status as Kosovo very soon because the West has created a precedent with the latter as always expecting that the rules that applies to it do not also apply for other nations as well.

@john hatton. Were the other nations UK, Germany, France, and others who recognised Kosovo forced by the Americans. Pls be serious. Memory is short. Many have forgotten what the people of Kosovo have gone through. They were saved from further genocides by the intervention of Europe and America. There was only one way for Kosovo and that was Independence as the majority being of Albanian origin would have been wiped out by the Serbs. Now in Ossetia and abkhazia those who are calling for independence (annexation with Russia) are a minority of Russians who have been planted there by Russia. This was Russian's policy of migration to other occupied countries such Latvia, Estonia, Lithuana, etc These ethnic Russians communities are the cause of much trouble in these countries, very often giving the pretext for Russia interference in the internal affairs of these countries.

Another BIG BLUNDER by the MoFA. This is a region and not a nation. I hpoe the MFA will not play any matches against teams, national or otherwise with this region.

Of course what's applicable to Kosovo and Montenegro will also be applicable to Ossieta and Abkhazia. I am also sure that The President of Georgia will be taken before the International Court at The Hague to answer ethnic cleansing charges against the Ossietian people.
