E-commerce will be the focus of the next annual conference of the Malta Communications Authority (MCA) to be held on October 24.

e-Commerce - Towards a Borderless Economy will explore the possibilities of buying and selling products and services over the internet and about conducting business processes in a networked electronic environment, encouraging transformation of internal systems, leading to efficiencies in terms of cost, responsiveness to customers, tailor-made offers and the potential emergence of new products and services.

"Today's internet technologies offer entrepreneurs a myriad of advantages and opportunities that simply did not exist before. Indeed, with the proliferation of the internet, online trade is growing exponentially. e-commerce undoubtedly breaks down the physical barriers normally associated with off-line trading, by revolutionising the way businesses conduct their affairs. Traders, no longer bound by time or geography, have ubiquitous access to both their clients and business partners," the MCA said while announcing the event.

"Local businesses (SMEs and retailers) need to fully understand the value that e-commerce begets and exploit the ability of telecommunications and information technologies to capitalise on economic efficiencies. Understanding the implications and contemporary developments is key to the successful adoption of e-commerce. Businesses simply cannot afford to ignore the concept of e-commerce!"

The conference will analyse, among others, the building blocks that underlie the core notion of 'e-readiness' and examining whether Malta's digital environment is conducive to foreign investment; the effects of e-commerce on the supply chain - the efficiencies that can be gained, especially by micro-enterprises, which constitute the majority of businesses in Malta; and the role of government as an enabler and driver of e-commerce.

Speakers and participants will focus on the readiness of Malta to exploit e-commerce, the difficulties encountered so far, and the prospects of foreign direct investment in this area.

The conference is aimed at businesses in general, including manufacturers, retailers and suppliers; government agencies; financial institutions; electronic communications service providers; software developers and students.

More details on the conference will be announced later, the MCA said.
